Work Schedule/Hours/Days The Assistant Director of Learning Communities and Student Success primarily works on campus during campus business hours. Occasional weekend or evening work is required due to training, student events, and crisis response.

Job Description The primary responsibility of the Assistant Director is to provide leadership to the student academic success and retention efforts within Housing and Residential Life.

Position Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • Lead the campus learning community program, which requires marketing the program to students and parents, collaborating with faculty, campus administrators, numerous campus departments, and program assessment and evaluation.

  • Serve on the campus team to develop strategies to intervene with students identified as retention risks through the campus early alert system.

  • Coordinate departmental outreach and intervention efforts and provide direction to professional and student staff.

  • Serve on the campus team to develop strategies to increase retention of unregistered students.

  • Coordinate and provide direction to professional and student staff regarding implementation of academic success and retention strategies.

  • Serve on the Housing and Residential Life leadership team and play a critical role in department operations and strategic planning.

  • Provide direction to department professional and student staff on matters related to academic success and retention, as well as during campus crisis.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree plus one year of professional experience working with communities or residence life or academic/retention programs. OR Bachelor’s degree plus two years of professional experience working with learning communities or residence life or academic/retention programs. OR Three years of professional experience working with learning communities or residence life or academic/retention programs or an equivalent of post-secondary training, education and/or professional experience.

  • Experience developing and implementing strategies and interventions to promote academic success and retention

  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with students and staff of diverse backgrounds

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field such as College Student Personnel, Educational Leadership, Higher Education Administration, or Counseling.

  • Experience supervising or providing work direction to professional staff

  • Experience working with learning communities

  • Experience partnering with faculty on student engagement efforts that may include linked course assignments or co-curricular programming

  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting data related to GPA and retention, and using it for assessment and program improvement

  • Experience serving in on-call duty rotation and/or responding to or providing direction during a campus crisis

Along with all other Universities that are part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, standard faculty appointments are for 168 duty days distributed over any nine consecutive months. The nine months need not align with the traditional academic year and may be changed every two years.
