Community Health Systems is a leading operator of general acute care hospitals and outpatient care centers in communities across the United States. CHS affiliates own, lease or operate 84 affiliated hospitals in 16 states with an aggregate of approximately 13,000 licensed beds. Healthcare services are also provided in more than 1,000 outpatient sites of care including affiliated physician practices, urgent care centers, freestanding emergency departments, imaging centers, cancer centers, and ambulatory surgery centers.

Summary: The Director will proactively assist hospitals in managing various aspects of Intensive Care Services including leadership for respiratory therapy teams. The Director shall focus primarily on helping hospitals and hospital systems to improve ICU operations. The Director will assist in establishment of Strategic Plans and in implementation of programs at targeted facilities. The Director will provide consultation in clinical specialty to personnel and other entities regarding program development, departmental operations, quality patient care and patient safety.
This person will generally act as the expert resource for CHS in the area of Intensive Care Services. This person provides corporate leadership for achievement of stated goals including operational excellence, safety, quality and revenue enhancement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for facilitating operational excellence in Intensive Care Services in cooperation with corporate, regional and hospital leadership. The Director will be responsible for analyses of outcomes, processes, technology, reimbursement and clinical practices at a minimum
  • Duties include demonstrating leadership in strategic planning and achievement of plan goals
  • Responsible for evaluating and supporting the Service Line specific performance improvement programs as defined by corporate leadership
  • Assumes responsibility for the development and implementation of programs and clinical initiatives and assists in evaluation of program processes. Research and develop evidenced based practice standards, best practice criteria, and outcomes metrics for CHS facilities
  • Serves as mentor and resource person for ICU or service line directors at hospitals or markets
  • Work in partnership with the intensive care medical advisor for CHS
  • Observe professional ethics in maintaining confidential information concerning the personal, financial, and medical or employment status of patients and staff of Community Health Systems
  • Develops collaborative relationships with corporate and hospital personnel, staff and physicians to ensure a continuum focus and improved operations
  • Experience in coaching, mentoring and developing others in a variety of key skills including: relationship management, project management, staffing, and execution

  • Proven successful track record of building, implementing and optimizing profitability and outcomes of surgical service lines on a large scale
  • Excellent technical, management, operational and clinical knowledge of surgery services at all levels of care within an acute healthcare setting
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, presentation and computer skills
  • Demonstrated experience and the ability to manage multiple groups, interact productively with varying levels of personnel and staff, and provide program direction and development
  • Ability to produce and utilize data for projects tracking and outcomes achievement
  • Ability to prioritize projects and resolve conflicting priorities
  • Ability to develop policies and procedures, performance dashboards and scorecards, assessment forms and other tools related to performance and quality metrics
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities; flexibility to accept and manage change
  • Identify educational needs and provide educational support as appropriate for each facility


  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Business, Health Care Administration, or other health/business field or currently actively enrolled in Master’s degree program in Nursing, Business, Health Care Administration, or other health/business related field


  • Minimum of ten years experience in varied disciplines of intensive care required.
  • Minimum of five years experience in management and administration in a large academic or tertiary facility.
  • Technical knowledge of intensive care services and the ICU environment.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, information systems, information management, and data analysis
  • Experience in multiple health care settings or healthcare system with multiple sites of operation preferred
  • Experience in leading Process Improvement focused on value stream mapping, rapid improvement events, metrics analysis and financial outcomes reporting

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Current Nursing Licensure
  • CCRN preferred

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form with several abstract and concrete variables

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Power Point and Google workspace products.
