THE POSITION

The Department of Corrections, State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Somerset is seeking an energetic, enthusiastic, self-motivated person with the required experience to work as Corrections Food Service Instructor.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position functions as lead worker by assigning, participating in, and reviewing routine and specialized tasks performed by inmates in the areas of pre-preparation, production, service, and baking. You will ensure proper control over inmates by enforcing custody and security regulations and inspect all food service areas, equipment, and food for conformance with established safety and sanitation standards.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:


  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours to be determined; typical work schedule is 4:00am to 12:00pm / 12:00pm to 8:00pm; Varied working days
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable. NOTE: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $43,022 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience in food preparation, production, and service of a variety of complete meal menus in an institutional food service operation, food catering service, restaurant, or in a similar large-scale food production operation; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Additional Requirements:
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
Preferred Qualifications (not required):
  • 2 years of experience in a large-scale food production operation in food preparation.
  • ServSafe® food handler certification.
  • 2 years of experience as a chief, sous chef or a line cook.
  • 1 year experience working with modified, specialized or therapeutic diet.
  • 1 year of food production experience in a hospital, nursing home, assisted living facility, Military or correctional facility setting.
