The Editorial Assistant position serves a support role in the Editorial Acquisitions department of the University of Michigan Press. The incumbent in this position will assist Acquisitions editors in their efforts to recruit scholarly monographs and texts and to facilitate the various processes associated with acquiring and developing such titles.
The University of Michigan Press is a vital component of UM Library's Michigan Publishing, which is the primary academic publishing division of the University. In partnership with our authors and series editors, the Press publishes around 100 peer-reviewed books a year in a range of humanities and social science disciplines.

Basic record and file maintenance and general assistance for two editors, including assisting editors in tracking projects
Maintaining communication between departments on active projects, preparing preliminary budget plans for new projects
Assisting editors in seeking reviewers and keeping review schedules on track and up-to-date
Drafting and processing contracts for new titles and book series
Mailing out contracts and manuscripts for review; mailing complimentary copies of books to authors and reviewers
Assembling and proofreading new project proposals for Acquisitions Approval meetings and Faculty Executive Committee meetings
Preparing manuscripts for production, confirming that all necessary elements of the manuscript are in-house and correctly formatted, permissions are in order, and images are usable
Functional supervision for undergraduate students
Working with editors to communicate with authors and make sure that the author’s vision and the Press’ vision are aligned
Assisting in educating less-experienced authors about the publishing process as a whole, and more veteran authors on the new challenges of publishing in the digital world
Serving as one of the author’s main contact points throughout the publishing process
Community college diploma or high school diploma and one to two years of relevant experience in collaborative project management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Excellent communication and customer service skills; possess a good vocabulary and writing skills; demonstrated ability to prepare and format electronic documents.
Strong organizational, time management, and problem-resolution skills; ability to meet deadlines consistently in a production environment
Ability to work independently and in a group environment as part of a well-functioning and diverse team
Understands and values diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.
Familiarity with desktop publishing tools.
Previous experience in book, journal, or magazine publishing.
Interest in new forms of digital scholarship and alternative (e.g., open access) business models.
40 hours/week; typically Monday - Friday, may change as needed
May require evening or weekend work during occasional special events

Physical Demands/Work Environment:
This position may have opportunities for both onsite and remote work.
The person in this position occasionally moves through the building to attend meetings/events and ascend/descends short flights of stairs to different floors of the building. Ability to move and/or transport materials that weigh up to 25 pounds.
