The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. We are currently seeking a Executive Director, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for our downtown Chicago office. This position is a hybrid role (three days in the office, two days working remote).

Starting base salary = $139,000 - $173,000 a year (commensurate with related experience).

The Executive Director, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) provides strategic and operational leadership to support an association-wide internal DEI strategy that aligns with our organizational mission, vision and values. Working collaboratively with other leaders and team members across the organization, the director is responsible for the development of new DEI programs and the integration of DEI principals and best practices throughout our work environment. The director will be a key driver to support an inclusive environment where everyone has a voice and can express their viewpoints.

  • Develop strategic and operational plans, programs, processes and metrics to drive DEI in support of our organizational mission, vision and values.
    • Building off the recommendations of the DEI Task Force, develop a DEI transformative strategy aligned with the organization’s multi-year strategic plan.
    • Enhance engagement in DEI across the association.
    • Leverage methods, metrics and benchmarks for measuring progress and continuously improving our efforts.
    • Create learning and development experiences to develop leaders who model and drive inclusive behaviors. Create and grow meaningful events and activities that encourage, connect and inspire team members to embrace DEI.
    • Collaborate closely with the Human Resources (HR) team to contribute to a continuous culture of learning that enhances the overall employee experience.
  • Assess team member needs related to DEI excellence.
  • Develop and lead a sustainable process to implement and continuously assess and adapt the association's goals related to DEI excellence.
  • Responsible for operationalizing DEI initiatives and establishing shared accountability across the association.
  • In concert with the HR and Legal teams, ensure all association programs and services comply with relevant state and federal laws, state regulation and organization policies as they relate to DEI.
  • Understand and leverage, when appropriate, diversity resources available across the broader landscape.
  • Regularly review and analyze best practices pertaining to DEI both in and outside of health care sector. Serve as an expert and a resource for the association’s leadership.

  • 5 - 7 years: • A minimum of five years developing and implementing justice, equity, diversity and inclusion programs.• Association, nonprofit, or government experience is a plus. • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism in working with sensitive and personal information.


  • Masters or better in HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT or related field
