Principal Government Affairs

Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Principal Government Affairs on Virgin Orbit’s Government Operations team, which advocates for budgets, programs, and policies that support Virgin Orbit’s vision of low-cost, flexible, responsive launch and space solutions. This position is responsible for representing Virgin Orbit with staff, leadership, and elected officials in the United States Congress and state governments. The successful candidate will advance Virgin Orbit’s business interests, pursuits, and opportunities by translating them into state and federal government policies, programs, funding, and support.


This is a full-time position at our Government Affairs office in Washington, D.C., with required business travel, as needed, to conferences and company headquarters in Long Beach, CA. Your Mission:
  • Serve as a representative of Virgin Orbit with the United States Congress and state and local government, advancing Virgin Orbit’s business objectives through successful advocacy for specific budgets, programs, and policies.
  • Support Virgin Orbit’s Political Action Committee through administrative upkeep and participation in PAC events.
  • Support overall company strategic planning and linking legislative and federal advocacy activities with business goals and pursuits.
  • Perform policy research to qualify new policy, program, and funding opportunities, including analysis of historic and current budgets, standing policy and policies required, and current legislative landscape and stakeholder preferences.
  • Develop and execute legislative engagement strategies. Provide detailed reports on activities as those engagements move forward.
  • Set up high-level, VIP meetings with ranking elected officials and US government leaders for company executives. Ensure company executives are prepared, briefed, and staffed for these meetings, and that follow-up actions are successfully completed.
  • Coordinate meetings with teammates, industry colleagues, government partners and stakeholders, and external consultants to develop insight into policy and political opportunities, challenges.
  • Participate as required in the Virgin Orbit National Systems/Virgin Orbit business development process.

What you bring: If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…
  • Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, International Affairs or similar field.
  • 10+ years of experience in government or government relations roles, with a background in national security or space policy preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record of communicating and advocating for policies, funding, and programs that advance organizational goals.
  • Reputation for being able to work collaboratively with high performance teams in a fast-paced environment, and to manage external and internal consultants and teammates to further advocacy objectives.
  • Ability to independently conduct policy research and analysis, and produce white papers, briefing documents, and reports tailored to policy stakeholder audiences.
  • A demonstrated sustained ability and reputation of developing legislative proposals and crafting and executing effective legislative strategies.
  • Strong understanding of the commercial space sector and background in launch services, satellites, space missions, and the processes and technologies that support them. Must be able to relate that background with an understanding of the U.S. federal, agency (DoD/NASA), and state-level budget-making, legislative, and regulatory processes.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and highly effective interpersonal skills to carry out daily interactions with technical leaders and business executives within the Corporation, Group, and Operation, as well as with government stakeholders and industry counterparts.
  • Past experience that demonstrates the ability to contribute to fast-paced business and advocacy leadership teams.
  • Strong ability to translate and communicate technical concepts and emerging technologies to non-technical, policy audiences.
  • Existing clearance preferred, eligibility to obtain or maintain a DoD Secret Clearance is required.
  • Ability to travel as required, up to 25%.
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15).

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
